The Cooktown Lighthouse is situated on Grassy Hill (300m above sea level). It is an automatic light now, but was once manned. The lighthouse is an historic feature of Cooktown. It was built in England, transported to Cooktown, and erected in 1885. It was automated in 1927 and was complemented by a Radar station during 1942-5. The lighthouse has served coastal shipping for 115 years. The lighthouse and the adjacent lookout are a favourite with visitors. It is great for viewing sunsets.
